The Phyllis S. Byrd Youth Fraternity sponsored by Georgianna Thomas Grand Chapter, OES-PHA of the District of Columbia, hosted the 2015 Majestic Cotillion on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at the College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in College Park, Maryland. The Cotillion was the culmination of a 10 week cultural, educational, and social experience. 


Grand Youth Directress and Cotillion Chairperson Catrice R. Vandross and Sponsor and Co-Chairperson Shari. L. McCoy opened the program with an invocation by Sponsor PM Robin Wise, followed by the history of Phyllis S. Byrd Youth Fraternity and the Occasion by Past Princess Matron Malaysia Bacon currently attending Virginia State University. “Majesty in Motion” Presentation of the 2015 Majestic Debutantes and Beaux followed the parents dance, Debutante and Beaux dance to “Black Butterfly” by Deniece Williams, and the Beaux dance to “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars.

The evening’s theme, “Once Upon a Dream” was carried out in the musical selections and presentation of the Debutantes and Beaux. The Presentation of the Debutantes and Beaux began with Royal fanfare. Six beautiful young ladies were presented, to the song “Isn’t She Lovely,” by Stevie Wonder. Each exemplified Beauty, Elegance, and Grace. The six debutantes and their schools were, Princess Nia Brevard, Elizabeth Seaton High School; Princess Amber Goffney, Wakefield High School; Princess KayaZhanna Donaldson, Valley View Elementary; Princess Jy’Niqua Harris, Walker Jones Education Campus; Princess Chandler Martin, National Collegiate Preparatory Public Charter High School; Princess Brandy Ross, Potomac High.

The six beaux were presented to “Boys to Men” by New Edition - Prince Patron Arndre “TJ” Hudson, Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School; Prince Clarence Berry, Bishop McNamara; Prince Christian Ferguson, St. Charles High School; Past Prince Patron Cameron Kemp, Green Valley Academy; and Prince Amari Robin, High Point High School.

Our Demi Debutantes were Princess Drue Beard, Princess Zoe Hackney, Princess Arianna Holmes, Princess Lyric McCoy, Princess Marlie McCoy, and Princess Alaina Wheeler. Our Demi Beaux were Prince Malachi Hammond and Prince Hassan White.

Our Jr. Debutantes were Princess Alona Cowsert, Princess Summer McKenzie, and Prince Jazmine Stolman.

Our dance choreographer Antionette Johnson was proud of the Debutante and Beaus performance. There was no greater sight than the parents beaming as they danced their children.

During the Symbolism part of our program Charge to Debutantes and Welcome to Society was eloquently delivered to the Debutantes by Mariessa Terrell and to the Beaux by Worshipful Master Terrence Wynn of Felix Lodge No. 3. The Response to Charge the was delivered by Miss Young and Natural Drakara Reid, followed by a Pledge Society Poem, “My Fabulous escort” written and recited by Princess Amber Goffney.

Demi Debutante Alaina Wheeler extended an invitation for the guest to dine with the Majestic Cotillion participants. Alaina blessed the meal and the hands that prepared it. The audience graciously accepted the invitation to be Our Guest and join us in a delectable meal while we were entertained by the jazz tunes of After Dark Band. To Be Young, Gifted and Black by Nina Simone announced the beginning of the talent section of our program, Demi Debutante Princess Zoe Hackney danced beautifully to “We Shall Behold Him.” Jerome Hackney, III sang a spirit filled version of This Little Light of Mine, Beau Clarence Berry masterfully played “Fur Elise,” by Beethoven and another poem written and recited by Debutante Amber Goffney, Beau Arndre TJ Hudson our Prince Patron recited “Our Deepest Fear,” by Marianne Williamson. Special Awards were given by Assistant Grand Youth Directresses Norma J. Brooks and Shirley Evans Cooley to each of the Debutantes and Beaux. Princess Leah Cobb received the Ujamaa Award for Cooperative Economics in sustaining her own business. The audience jubilantly applauded as Grand Worthy Matron Venecia Bessellieu and Grand Worthy Patron Albert Pope crowned the 2015 Majestic Court; Demi Beau Majestic Prince Malachi Hammond and Demi Debutante Majestic Zoe Hackney, Demi Beau Majestic Prince Hassan White and Demi Debutante Majestic Princess Alaina Wheeler. Our 2015 Majestic Cotillion Miss Majestic Debutante Amber L. Goffney and Mr. Majestic Beau Clarence J. Berry were crowned. The Coronation and Royal Promenade of Miss and Mr. Majestic was absolutely beautiful. These participants had the highest score combination in grade point averages, attendance, community service hours and were the most congenial.

The program concluded with the closing remarks and a standing ovation to A Wish Triumphant.
